Seasonal water source patterns in a northern Arizona pine forest

چکیده
The relationships among stand density and seasonal plant water source patterns in ponderosa pine ( Pinus ) forests are important for informed management decisions a bimodal climate with increasing variability winter monsoon precipitation inputs. Winter recharges soil moisture, yet it has declined over the past 20 years southwestern United States, is becoming more variable both magnitude timing. Near Flagstaff, Arizona August 2013 (monsoon), October (post-monsoon), May 2014 (post snow melt), we measured δD at five depths, xylem Muhlenbergia montana (a perennial C 4 grass), Festuca arizonica 3 P. seedlings (< 2 old), saplings (2–5 cm basal diameter), mature trees (> 60 diameter breast height) treated (thinned burned) untreated (no thinning, no burning) stands. We found that moisture was higher all depths stands May, after melt, this pattern persisted through deepest (60 cm). also that, sampling months, of grasses indicated use shallower than trees, presumably due to differences rooting depths. Additionally, August, greater reliance on deeper stands, likely competition shallow Our isotopic data indicate used predominantly October, while during months. Importantly, our regenerating (seedlings saplings) sources, suggesting an increasingly role if inputs continue decline. Collectively, these findings demonstrate actions can benefit via increased overstory rely precipitation, herbaceous species younger, trees.

A Unique old-growth ponderosa pine forest in northern Arizona
Old-growth ponderosa pine (Pinusponderosa) forests are uncommon in the Southwest, and only one old growth forest (the Gus Pearson Natural Area [GPNA]) has been researched in the ponderosa pine belt sur rounding the city of Flagstaff in northern Arizona. The purpose of this study was to measure soil characteris tics, current and pre-Euro-American settlement (1885) tree structure, and understory ...
متن کاملPlant recruitment in a northern Arizona ponderosa pine forest: Testing seed- and leaf litter- limitation hypotheses
Seed availability and leaf litter limit plant establishment in some ecosystems. To evaluate the hypothesis that these factors limit understory plant recruitment in Pinus ponderosa forests, I conducted a seeding and litter removal experiment at six thinned sites in the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, northern Arizona. Experimental seeding of four native species (Penstemon virgatus, Erigeron for...
متن کاملContrasting patterns in pine forest ecosystems
Forests and woodlands dominated by pines (Pinus spp.) occur naturally over an unusually broad range of environmental conditions in the northern hemisphere and now they are widely planted south of the equator. Some pine species occur in savannas that are characterized by surface fires every 10 years or less, while others form dense forests that are burned at intervals of 100-300 years. Contrasti...
متن کاملSeasonal patterns of carbon dioxide and water fluxes in three representative tundra ecosystems in northern Alaska
Understanding the carbon dioxide and water fluxes in the Arctic is essential for accurate assessment and prediction of the responses of these ecosystems to climate change. In the Arctic, there have been relatively few studies of net CO2, water, and energy exchange using micrometeorological methods due to the difficulty of performing these measurements in cold, remote regions. When these measure...
متن کاملNOTE / NOTE Dwarf mistletoe effects on fuel loadings in ponderosa pine forests in northern Arizona
Southwestern dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium vaginatum (Willd.) J. Presl ssp. cryptopodum) infests about 0.9 million ha in the southwestern United States. Several studies suggest that dwarf mistletoes affect forest fuels and fire behavior; however, few studies have quantified these effects. We compared surface fuel loadings and predicted fire behavior among four levels of dwarf mistletoe infestat...
