Seasonal variability of eddy kinetic energy in the East Australian current region

چکیده

The East Australian Current (EAC) is an important western boundary current of the South Pacific subtropical Circulation with high mesoscale eddy kinetic energy (EKE). Based on satellite altimeter observations and outputs from eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model (OGCM) for Earth Simulator (OFES), seasonal variability EKE its associated dynamic mechanism in EAC region are studied. High mainly concentrated shear-region between poleward southern extension equatorward recirculation along Australia's east coast, which confined within upper (0-300 m). this area exhibits obvious variation, strong austral summer maximum (465±89 cm² s-²) February weak winter minimum (334±48 August. Energetics analysis OFES suggests that modulated by mixed instabilities composed barotropic baroclinic ocean, instability (baroclinic instability) main source (winter). process controlled zonal shear meridional velocities recirculation. synchronously strengthened (weakened) due to local positive (negative) sea level anomalies (SLA) under geostrophic equilibrium, dominated enhanced (slackened), results a (low) region.

Variability and forcing of the East Australian Current

[1] The spatial and temporal variability of the East Australian Current (EAC) is investigated using 6 years (1993–1998) of surface geostrophic stream function from an optimal interpolation of altimeter sea surface heights and velocities derived from tracking thermal features in satellite imagery. Variability appears as a series of cyclones and anticyclones propagating southwestward and westward...

Eddy kinetic energy and small-scale sea level height variability

A mathematical connection is established between the ocean near-surface geostrophic kinetic energy and the small-scale variance of its surface height. The latter is defined as the spatial variance of sea surface height inside a given grid box and represents a basic statistical characteristic of the field, necessary for estimating its vulnerability to sampling error. The former is also computed ...

Study of seasonal distribution of dust in the Middle East region using CALIOP and MODIS data

Aerosol optical depth in 550 nm and angstrom exponent measurements with MODIS have been studied with 1-degree resolution for the period 2006-2017 in the middle east. Moreover, tropospheric aerosol optical depth and depolarization ratios measured at 532 nm with CALIOP have been studied for same area and same period of time too. These parameters have been classified seasonally. Optical depth resu...
