Seasonal mode-1 M2 internal tides from satellite altimetry

چکیده

Abstract The seasonal variability of mode-1 M 2 internal tides is investigated using 25 years multi-satellite altimeter data from 1992–2017. Four tide models are constructed seasonally-subsetted and World Ocean Atlas climatologies. This work made possible by a newly-developed mapping procedure that can significantly suppress model errors. Seasonal-mean seasonally-variable derived the four models. All inter-compared evaluated independent CryoSat-2 data. seasonal-mean overall best because averaging further reduces better in tropical zone, where large signals may overcome Each works its own season worst opposite season. These reveal subject to significant their variations function location. Large dominantly occur climatology shows strong ocean stratification. Seasonal phase obtained directionally-decomposed components. They ±60° at equator up ±120° central Arabian Sea. Incoherence caused usually <10%, but be 40–50% zone.

Mode-1 internal tides in the western North Atlantic Ocean

Mode-1 internal tides were observed the western North Atlantic using an ocean acoustic tomography array deployed in 1991–1992 centered on 251N, 661W. The pentagonal array, 700-km across, acted as an antenna for mode-1 internal-tides. Coherent internal-tide waves with O(1m) displacements were observed traveling in several directions. Although the internal tides of the region were relatively quie...

Incoherent Nature of M2 Internal Tides at the Hawaiian Ridge

Moored current, temperature, and conductivity measurements are used to study the temporal variability of M2 internal tide generation above the Kaena Ridge, between the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Kauai. The energy conversion from the barotropic to baroclinic tide measured near the ridge crest varies by a factor of 2 over the 6-month mooring deployment (0.5–1.1 W m). The energy flux measured ju...

Marine gravity anomaly from Geosat and ERS 1 satellite altimetry

Closely spaced satellite altimeter profiles collected during the Geosat Geodetic Mission (-6 km) and the ERS 1 Geodetic Phase (8 km) are easily converted to grids of vertical gravity gradient and gravity anomaly. The long-wavelength radial orbit error is suppressed below the noise level of the altimeter by taking the along-track derivative of each profile. Ascending and descending slope profile...

Topex/Poseidon Satellite Altimetry

A recently developed multiresolution estimation framework offers the possibility of highly efficient statistical analysis, interpolation, and smoothing of extremely large data sets in a multiscale fashion. This framework enjoys a number of advantages not shared by other statistically-based methods. In particular, the algorithms resulting from this framework have complexity that scales only line...

Gravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines

Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...
