Seasonal change of multifrequency backscatter in three Baltic Sea habitats

نویسندگان

چکیده

This study investigated the seasonality of acoustic backscatter intensities, exploring three habitats in southwestern Baltic Sea: 1) a mussel-covered reef, 2) coarse sand and gravel, 3) seagrass meadows. Backscatter information different, partly calibrated frequencies (200, 400, 550, 700 kHz) was collected seasons (May, August, October). The data were supported by point samples video profiles for grain size benthic community analysis. Angular response curves helped to quantify seasonal different frequencies. multifrequency multiseasonal maps distinguish reveal variable differences backscatter, but not all changes can be recognized data. high-backscatter reef shows little frequency independent. ecologically valuable gravel areas show small-scale alterations sediment composition morphology, mainly caused local hydrodynamics. Higher found best suited identify gravel. Seagrass meadows is dominated growth blades, increasing compared bare sand. use multiple beneficial as low sensitive shallow subsurface features such rhizomes, while higher highlights related coarser sediment.

Stakeholder Perceptions of Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region

The project “Developing Policies and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region” (AS TRA) assesses regional vulnerabilities to climate change and aims for developing adaptation options. To de termine whether the participating municipalities are prepared to climate change, this study investigates stake holder perspectives and knowledge in multiple case studies. Based on ...

Seasonal change of antarctic sea ice cover.

The winter expansion of the sea ice surrounding Antarctica and the subsequent retreat of the ice in summer may be linked with the wind stress acting on the Southern Ocean in conjunction with the heat exchange in open water regions within the ice fields.

Projected future climate change and Baltic Sea ecosystem management

Climate change is likely to have large effects on the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Simulations indicate 2-4 °C warming and 50-80 % decrease in ice cover by 2100. Precipitation may increase ~30 % in the north, causing increased land runoff of allochthonous organic matter (AOM) and organic pollutants and decreased salinity. Coupled physical-biogeochemical models indicate that, in the south, bottom-water...

Seasonal significance of N2 fixation in coastal and offshore waters of the northwestern Baltic Sea

Annual rates of N2 fixation were measured over 3 yr (1998–2000) at an open water station (BY31) and 2 coastal stations (H4 and X1) in the Baltic Sea. This is the first report on depthintegrated rates of N2 fixation from more than one complete growth season in the Baltic Sea. Annual estimates of N2 fixation ranged from 56 000 to 125 000 t N in the Baltic Proper, and 18 000 to 162 000 t N at the ...
