Seasonal and long-term consequences of esca grapevine disease on stem xylem integrity

چکیده

Abstract Hydraulic failure has been extensively studied during drought-induced plant dieback, but its role in plant-pathogen interactions is under debate. During esca, a grapevine (Vitis vinifera) disease, symptomatic leaves are prone to irreversible hydraulic dysfunctions little known about the integrity of perennial organs over short- and long-term. We investigated effects esca on stem naturally infected plants within single season across season(s). coupled direct (ks) indirect (kth) conductivity measurements, tylose vascular pathogen detection with vivo X-ray microtomography visualizations. Xylem occlusions (tyloses) subsequent loss occurred all shoots severe symptoms (apoplexy) more than 60% moderate (tiger-stripe), no tyloses asymptomatic shoots. In observations demonstrated that only when leaf appeared, resulted 50% conductance 40% stems, unrelated symptom age. The impact xylem was seasonal, long-term disease history. Our study how what extent such as affecting integrity, could amplify mortality through failure.

Fungi associated with Esca disease of grapevine in Germany

Esca disease of grapevine is gaining increasing importance in Central European wine-growing countries. Several fungi, all of which are wood-inhabiting, were found to be associated with the disease. The taxa thought to act as main causal agents are the basidiomycete, Fomitiporia mediterranea, and, less frequently, the deuteromycetes, Phaeomoniella chlamydospora and Phaeoacremonium aleophilum. In...

Esca (black measles) of grapevine. An overview

More than 100 years ago a grapevine disease of unknown etiology was recognized in France and California, where it was called “folletage” (Ravaz, 1898) and “sunstroke” respectively (Anonymous, 1895). In both cases the disorder was considered to be due to a physiological condition resulting from what was called “abrupt changes in the bottom water level.” Research on the pathological nature of the...

The peripheral xylem of grapevine (Vitis vinifera). 1. Structural integrity in post-veraison berries

During the development of many fleshy fruits, water flow becomes progressively more phloemic and less xylemic. In grape (Vitis vinifera L.), the current hypothesis to explain this change is that the tracheary elements of the peripheral xylem break as a result of berry growth, rendering the xylem structurally discontinuous and hence non-functional. Recent work, however, has shown via apoplastic ...
