Seagrass valuation from fish abundance, biomass and recreational catch

چکیده
The value of critical habitats, such as seagrass, to act a nursery varies spatially and temporally; however, information is essential for the public stakeholders appropriately manage these habitats. We use an existing systematic long-term fisheries dataset in Port Phillip Bay examine variability habitat important commercial recreational species, King George Whiting (Sillaginodes punctatus). represents one most marine assets southern hemisphere surrounded by second-largest city Australia, Melbourne, home 4.5 million people. modelled abundance whiting function environmental variables, using Boosted Regression Trees (BRT). Fish densities ranged from 1,000 30,000 individuals ha?1y?1, equalling adult biomass 110–3,300 kg ha?1y?1. This production supports between 69 2,062 fishing trips year, with estimated seagrass AUD 687–20,625 Based on data, 6662 ha are valued at around 36 annually.

Estimating fish abundance and biomass from eDNA concentrations: variability among capture methods and environmental conditions.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) promises to ease noninvasive quantification of fish biomass or abundance, but its integration within conservation and fisheries management is currently limited by a lack of understanding of the influence of eDNA collection method and environmental conditions on eDNA concentrations in water samples. Water temperature is known to influence the metabolism of fish and conse...
متن کاملCatch per unit efforts and impacts of gears on fish abundance in an oxbow lake ecosystem in Eastern India
Background: Oxbow lakes are abundant in indigenous fishes, but they are subject to unsustainable fishing practices, potential overexploitation, and indiscriminate use of fine-meshed fishing gear. To quantify the catch per unit effort (CPUE) and impact of fishing gears on fish abundance, a survey was carried out in an oxbow lake in eastern India. Methods: The gear-wise CPUE for fish caught in...

Fisheries scientists face a challenge in that virtually all methods of fish capture or observation are selective. Further, most fish capture methods can be applied to only a fraction of the entire area of interest. Thus, measures such as catch per unit effort (C/f) or catch per area can only be regarded, at best, as being proportional to the true population abundance (see Chapter 7). The method...
متن کاملIdentification and catch composition of fish from set net (Moshta) fishery in Bandar Abbas, Persin Gulf
This study on set-net fishing at the coastal area of Bandar Abbas was conducted from October to April 2012. A totally of 54 set-net operations were recorded, random samplig monthly of 9 set-net from Nakhlenakhoda, Khajehatatta and Suru were conducted. Catch data of every set-net operator were recorded monthly. Fishes were identified, length and weight frequency of fishes were recorded. Results ...
متن کاملFish harder; catch more?
Perhaps the most fundamental insight from fishery science is that ecosystems impose important and predictable constraints on food production from the sea. The familiar hump-shaped growth curve implies that the growth rate and carrying capacity of a species limit its production: Once stocks are depleted, further increasing fishing pressure will only lead to decreases in catch. This logic underpi...
