Immunopathology of Schistosoma mansoni infection.
Schistosomiasis mansoni is a chronic helminthic disease that affects about 100 million people in the tropics. The worms have a life span of 5 to 10 years, and they live in the mesenteric veins of the host. Lightly infected individuals are asymptomatic or manifest mild intestinal symptoms. Heavily infected individuals often develop severe morbidity with hepatosplenomegaly, sometimes with a fatal...
متن کاملImmunodiagnosis of infection with Schistosoma mansoni: Enzyme-
A circulating antigen, a negatively charged polysaccharide from the trematode Schistosoma mansoni, was noncovalently bound to the surface of poly(L-lysine).coated wells in polystyrene trays, which were then used in a micro-enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test. The method provides an immunodiagnostic test for schistosomiasis of exceptional sensitivity with a high degree of specificity. ...
متن کاملCerebral vasculitis associated with Schistosoma mansoni infection
BACKGROUND Cerebral involvement in schistosomiasis is not rare, but it is underdiagnosed because of the lack of clinical suspicion and the frequency of asymptomatic forms. Neurologic complications are generally supported by granuloma formation around ectopic eggs which have migrated to the brain. Moreover, vascular lesions and cerebral arteritis have been well documented in histopathological st...
متن کاملExperimental models of Schistosoma mansoni infection.
Experimental models of Schistosoma mansoni infections in mammals have contributed greatly to our understanding of the pathology and pathogenesis of infection. We consider here hepatic and extrahepatic disease in models of acute and chronic infection. Experimental schistosome infections have also contributed more broadly to our understanding of granulomatous inflammation and our understanding of...
متن کاملDuodenal involvement in Schistosoma mansoni infection.
Intestinal involvement in Schistosoma mansoni infection is usually confined to the ileum and colon. Duodenal infestation was diagnosed in a patient with recurrent schistosomiasis despite treatment who presented with a postoperative small bowel fistula. Duodenal schistosomiasis can be suspected on endoscopy, but must always be confirmed by biopsy.
