United States households' consumption expenditures and car purchases collapsed during the Great Recession more so than income changes would have predicted. Using CEX data, we show that both extensive intensive spending margins contracted sharply in Recession. We also document significant cross‐cohort differences impact of including a stronger reduction by younger cohorts. draw inference on sources investigating which shocks can explain household choices 60 period life‐cycle model with idiosyncratic aggregate fitted to moments. find was caused combination large wealth shocks, while adjustment patterns imply role for profile shocks. loan premia accounting loans.
