Scaling in Internally Heated Convection: A Unifying Theory

نویسندگان

چکیده

We offer a unifying theory for turbulent purely internally heated convection, generalizing the theories of Grossmann and Lohse (2000, 2001) Rayleigh--B\'enard turbulence Shishkina, (2016) horizontal which are both based on splitting kinetic thermal dissipation rates in respective boundary bulk contributions. obtain mean temperature system Reynolds number (which response parameters) as function control parameters, namely internal driving strength (called, when nondimensionalized, Rayleigh--Roberts number) Prandtl number. The results consistent with our direct numerical simulations.

Internally heated convection beneath a poor conductor

We consider convection in an internally heated (IH) layer of fluid that is bounded below by a perfect insulator and above by a poor conductor. The poorly conducting boundary is modelled by a fixed heat flux. Using solely analytical methods, we find linear and energy stability thresholds for the static state, and we construct a lower bound on the mean temperature that applies to all flows. The l...

Penetrative internally heated convection in two and three dimensions

Convection of an internally heated fluid, confined between top and bottom plates of equal temperature, is studied by direct numerical simulation in two and three dimensions. The unstably stratified upper region drives convection that penetrates into the stably stratified lower region. The fraction of produced heat escaping across the bottom plate, which is one half without convection, initially...

Natural Convection in a Periodically Heated Slot

Heat transfer resulting from the natural convection in a fluid layer contained in an infinite horizontal slot bounded by solid walls and subject to a spatially periodic heating at the lower wall has been investigated. The heating produces sinusoidal temperature variations along one horizontal direction characterized by the wave number α with the amplitude expressed in terms of a suitably define...

Unifying scaling theory for vortex dynamics in two-dimensional turbulence.

We present a scaling theory for unforced inviscid two-dimensional turbulence. Our model unifies existing spatial and temporal scaling theories. The theory is based on a self-similar distribution of vortices of different sizes A. Our model uniquely determines the spatial and temporal scaling of the associated vortex number density which allows the determination of the energy spectra and the vort...

Convection patterns in end-heated inclined enclosures.

The natural convection in inclined side-heated rectangular boxes with adiabatic walls is theoretically and numerically investigated. The study is focused on the characterization of the convection patterns arising at the core of the basic steady unicellular flow and covers the whole range of Prandtl numbers (0< or = Pr < or = infinity) and inclinations (from alpha=0 degrees, heated-from-below ve...
