Scalable algorithms for designing CO2 capture and storage infrastructure

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is a climate change mitigation strategy that aims to reduce the amount of vented into atmosphere from industrial processes. Designing cost-effective CCS infrastructure critical in meeting emission reduction targets computationally challenging problem. We formalize computational problem designing detail fundamental intractability as instances grow size. explore problem’s relationship ecosystem network design problems, introduce three novel algorithms for its solution. evaluate our proposed against existing exact approaches find they all run dramatically less time than generate solutions are very close optimal. Decreasing it takes determine designs will support national-level scenario analysis, undertaking risk sensitivity assessments, understanding impact government policies (e.g., tax credits CCS).
