Sap Is Clever? Sap Ascent for Undergraduates Investigated with an Artificial Tree

چکیده
Water is the essential component in living and its role particularly important plants. In fact, crucial photosynthesis process involves a huge loss of sap by transpiration (around 99% from total amount recovered soil through plant roots) stomas on leaves. Therefore, question arises: How could trees raise to heights up 100 m? this article we present simple experimental setup that provides direct visualization quantification water ascent against gravity. Moreover, artificial tree offers analogies with “real” ones will help undergraduate science students different areas investigate influence environmental morphological parameters variety physics phenomena underlying ascension mechanism.

Misunderstanding sap ascent in trees
Trees transport water from their roots to their leaves thanks to an efficient but vulnerable vascular system. Assessing the vulnerability to drought of the xylem and its ability to recover from failure are not an easy task but recent findings demonstrate that, contrary to what is commonly believed, hydraulic failure and embolism repair are not routine in trees. Trees are amazing organisms. They...
متن کاملTree hydraulics: how sap rises
Trees transport water from roots to crown—a height that can exceed 100 m. The physics of tree hydraulics can be conveyed with simple fluid dynamics based upon the Hagen–Poiseuille equation and Murray’s law. Here the conduit structure is modelled as conical pipes and as branching pipes. The force required to lift sap is generated mostly by transpiration or capillary action; we investigate the ef...

Tree Species with Photosynthetic Stems Have Greater Nighttime Sap Flux
An increasing body of evidence has shown that nighttime sap flux occurs in most plants, but the physiological implications and regulatory mechanism are poorly known. The significance of corticular photosynthesis has received much attention during the last decade, however, the knowledge of the relationship between corticular photosynthesis and nocturnal stem sap flow is limited at present. In th...
