چکیده
The increasing integration of large-scale electricity generation from renewable energy sources in the grid requires support through cheap, reliable, and accessible bulk storage technologies, delivering large amounts both quickly over extended periods. Compressed air (CAES) represents such a option, with three commercial facilities using salt caverns for operational Germany, US, Canada, CAES now being actively considered many countries. Massively bedded halite deposits exist UK already host, or are for, solution-mined underground gas (UGS) caverns. We have assessed those proven UGS potential purposes, tool developed during EPSRC-funded IMAGES project, equations which were validated data Huntorf plant. From calculated total theoretical ‘static’ (one-fill) capacity exceeding that demand ?300 TWh 2018, filtering results suggests minimum several tens exergy caverns, when co-located sources, connected to off-peak electricity, offers significant contributions decarbonisation efforts.

Potential and Evolution of Compressed Air Energy Storage: Energy and Exergy Analyses
Energy storage systems are increasingly gaining importance with regard to their role in achieving load levelling, especially for matching intermittent sources of renewable energy with customer demand, as well as for storing excess nuclear or thermal power during the daily cycle. Compressed air energy storage (CAES), with its high reliability, economic feasibility, and low environmental impact, ...
متن کاملModeling and control of an open accumulator Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system for wind turbines
This paper presents the modeling and control for a novel Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system for wind turbines. The system captures excess power prior to electricity generation so that electrical components can be downsized for demand instead of supply. Energy is stored in a high pressure dual chamber liquid-compressed air storage vessel. It takes advantage of the power density of hydra...
متن کاملControllable and affordable utility-scale electricity from intermittent wind resources and compressed air energy storage (CAES)
World wind energy resources are substantial, and in many areas, such as the US and northern Europe, could in theory supply all of the electricity demand. However, the remote or challenging location (i.e. offshore) and especially the intermittent character of the wind resources present formidable barriers to utilization on the scale required by a modern industrial economy. All of these technical...
