Salinisation of arid temporary pools alters crustacean hatching success but not phenology dynamics

چکیده

Abstract The widespread acceleration of freshwater salinisation due to human activities, such as pollution, resource extraction and urbanisation coupled with climate change, poses a significant threat aquatic ecosystems. Limited work has been directed towards effects in temporary wetland systems. These systems are characterised by unique crustacean communities reliant on dormant egg production. We assessed from semi–arid pans the Khakhea–Bray Transboundary Aquifer region South Africa using laboratory–based approach. Sediment containing resting eggs was exposed water varying salinities (0‒10 ppt), emergent hatchlings were over 30–day hydroperiod. At 2.5 ppt above, there decreases taxa richness abundance. Spinicaudata Ostracoda most sensitive high salinities. Cladocera, Copepoda, Notostraca Anostraca had shallower salinity, but hatchability still fell rapidly. There limited effect community hatching phenology dynamics all showing reduced time overall, exception Cladocera which exhibited clear unimodal response, peaking around 20 days post‒inundation. This suggests that main impact these will be reductions success hence recruitment, leading changes predation pressures, food web structure functioning ecosystems, implications for associated ecosystem services.

Female Hematozoan Infection Reduces Hatching Success but not Fledging Success in Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca

—We report association between female blood parasite prevalence (percentage of infected birds) just after egg laying and reproductive success in two successive breeding seasons, in a breeding population of Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca in central Spain. Females infected with Trypanosoma spp. had a higher probability of deserting their clutches during the incubation period than noninfected ...

imatinib alters cell viability but not growth factors levels in tm4 sertoli cells

background: the anticancer agent imatinib (im) is a small molecular analog ofatp that inhibits tyrosine kinase activity of platelet derived growth factors (pdgfs)and stem cell factor (scf) receptor in cancer cells. however these factors have a keyrole in regulating growth and development of normal sertoli, leydig and germcells.objective: the aim of this study was to determine cell viability, pd...

Genetic diversity, but not hatching success, is jointly affected by postglacial colonization and isolation in the threatened frog, Rana latastei.

Both postglacial colonization and habitat fragmentation can reduce the genetic diversity of populations, which in turn can affect fitness. However, since these processes occur at different spatial and temporal scales, the consequences of either process may differ. To disentangle the relative role of isolation and postglacial colonization in determining genetic diversity and fitness, we studied ...

Culex mosquitoes in temporary urban rain pools: seasonal dynamics and relation to environmental variables.

The study was conducted in a park of Buenos Aires City, where a total of 89 rain pools were sampled weekly for mosquito immature stages over a one-year period. The aim of the present paper was to investigate the seasonal dynamics of three Culex species breeding in temporary rain pools and to analyze the relationships of the presence of these species to pool dimensions, pool age, vegetation, and...
