Relevance of saddle-splay elasticity in complex nematic geometries.
We demonstrate the relevance of saddle-splay elasticity in nematic liquid crystalline fluids in the context of complex surface anchoring conditions and the complex geometrical confinement. Specifically, nematic cells with patterns of surface anchoring and colloidal knots are shown as examples where saddle-splay free energy contribution can have a notable role which originates from nonhomogeneou...
متن کاملChiral structures and defects of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals induced by saddle-splay elasticity.
An experimental and theoretical study of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) confined in cylinders with degenerate planar boundary conditions elucidates LCLC director configurations. When the Frank saddle-splay modulus is more than twice the twist modulus, the ground state adopts an inhomogeneous escaped-twisted configuration. Analysis of the configuration yields a large saddle-splay mo...
متن کاملMagnetic and Electric Field Induced Periodic Deformations in Nematics
This work reports theoretical studies on the occurrence oi a static periodic distortion (PD in a nematic sample under the action of crossed electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields applied on a uniformly aligned initial director configuration (no) Linear stability analysis with rigid anchoring hypothesis is employed For homeotropic alignment of a nematic such as &f1 which has negative dielectric an...

متن کاملSaddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface
The scaled-particle theory equation of state for the two-dimensional hard-disk fluid on a curved surface is proposed and used to determine the saddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface. The resulting contribution to saddle-splay modulus, which is caused by thermal motion of the adsorbed particles, is comparable in magnitude with the saddlesplay modulus of a simple fluid interface.
