Real-time functional brain mapping using electrocorticography
We demonstrate the feasibility of real-time cortical mapping from arrays of subdural electrodes using the electrocorticographic signal power in the higher spectral frequencies (76-200 Hz, or "chi-index"). Hand area was mapped offline in eight individuals using brief baseline and hand-movement measurements. In one patient, hand sensorimotor cortex was identified online during a handshake. We pro...
متن کاملInformation-based functional brain mapping.
The development of high-resolution neuroimaging and multielectrode electrophysiological recording provides neuroscientists with huge amounts of multivariate data. The complexity of the data creates a need for statistical summary, but the local averaging standardly applied to this end may obscure the effects of greatest neuroscientific interest. In neuroimaging, for example, brain mapping analys...
متن کاملFunctional Brain Mapping
FUNCTIONAL BRAIN MAPPING may be useful for both preoperative planning and intraoperative neurosurgical decision making. “Gold standard” functional studies such as direct electrical stimulation and recording are complemented by newer, less invasive techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging. Less invasive techniques allow more areas of the brain to be mapped in more subjects (inclu...
متن کاملReal-Time Software for Functional Mapping of Eloquent Cortex Using Electrocorticography.
In this work, we present and validate a software package for functional mapping of eloquent cortex using task-related changes in gamma activity recorded from subdural electrocorticography electrodes prior to resective brain surgery. The software is designed for use by non-experts in addition to traditional mapping procedures such as electrical cortical stimulation (ECS) mapping.
متن کاملEvaluation of a visualization-based approach to functional brain mapping
We describe a method for mapping stimulation data, obtained at the time of neurosurgery for intractable epilepsy, onto a 3D MRI-based neuroanatomic model of the individual patient. The mapping is done by comparing an intraoperative photograph of the exposed cortical surface with a computer-based MR visualization of the surface, interactively indicating corresponding stimulation sites, and recor...
