Route overlap metrics to batch orders

In this study different metrics to perform order batching for a unidirectional cyclical picking system are investigated. Batches must be formed minimise walking distance that is measured as the total number of cycles traversed by pickers.Route overlap developed approximate before picker routing. Thereby, information about route similarity added identify orders compatible batching.A span length section line walks collect items in an order. Three based on concept developed, namely stops non-identical spans, stops-spans and ratio metric.Numerical experiments carried out determine best combination between metric method. A prominent South African retailer's distribution centre provides \(50\)~sample waves experimental set up with real-life data. The spans used together greedy smallest entry heuristic consistently leads low complete wave relative other methods.
