Rotating Gaussian wave packets in weak external potentials
We address the time evolution of twoand three-dimensional nonrelativistic Gaussian wave packets in the presence of a weak external potential of arbitrary functional form. The focus of our study is the phenomenon of rotation of a Gaussian wave packet around its center of mass, as quantified by mean angular momentum computed relative to the wave-packet center. Using a semiclassical approximation ...
متن کاملExact results for ‘ bouncing ’ Gaussian wave packets
We consider time-dependent Gaussian wave packet solutions of the Schrödinger equation (with arbitrary initial central position, x0, and momentum, p0, for an otherwise free-particle, but with an infinite wall at x = 0, so-called bouncing wave packets. We show how difference or mirror solutions of the form ψ(x, t)−ψ(−x, t) can, in this case, be normalized exactly, allowing for the evaluation of a...
متن کاملElastic Gaussian Wave Packets in Isotropic Media
The theory of Gaussian wave packet (GWP) propagation in elastic materials is developed. The GWP solutions are in the form of localized disturbances with Gaussian spatial envelopes at any instant in time. The method is explicitly time dependent, but is conceptually no more difficult than time halmonic ray theory. The equations of propagation and evolution are very similar to those of standard, e...
متن کاملMatching wavelet packets to Gaussian random processes
In this paper, we consider the problem of approximating a set of arbitrary, discrete-time, Gaussian random processes by a single, representative wavelet-based, Gaussian process. We measure the similarity between the original processes and the wavelet-based process with the Bhattacharyya coefficient. By manipulating the Bhattacharyya coefficient, we reduce the task of defining the representative...
متن کاملGeometric Segmentation Using Gaussian Wave Packets
We segment seismic data based on the geometric information provided by sparse gaussian wave packet representations. We use this information to for estimates an abundance of candidate curves for the identification of the wave fronts. A graph cut methodology is then employed to reduce the number of curves such that the data is well described by only few wave fronts.
