Roles of leaf functional traits in fungal endophyte colonization: Potential implications for host–pathogen interactions

چکیده

Fungal endophytes (FE) are an important component of leaf microbial communities. They usually live asymptomatically within tissues; however, FE can provide additional defensive features against pathogens to the host. Leaf functional traits (LFTs) regulate entry, colonization and community composition in plants. There is evidence that thin leaves with less structural chemical but high nutrient content more prone than well-defended thick leaves. This illustrates relevance trade-offs (= increase a trait, decrease another trait) LFTs, suggesting economics spectrum (LES, which describes relationships suite aligned from resource-acquisitive resource-conservative ecological strategy) may be predictor We hypothesize LES-modulated changes internal environment (i.e. thin, low-defended vs. thick, leaves) will (a) have consequences for host resistance due diversity and, subsequently, foliar profile (b) cause switch behaviour pathogenic lifestyle. Synthesis. Still, our knowledge how coexistence between plants regulated remains limited. LFTs act as relevant hub colonization, life natural ecosystems, potential bottom-up effects on other organisms, including pathogens. highlight discuss critical aspects this topic end by proposing new avenues research emerging field.

Fungal endophyte effects on leaf chemistry alter the invitro growth rates of leaf-cutting ants' fungal mutualist, Leucocoprinus gongylophorus

Fungal symbionts that colonize leaf tissue asymptomatically (endophytes) can alter the foraging behaviour of leaf-cutting ants, and decrease the productivity of this herbivore’s mutualistic fungal cultivar, Leucocoprinus gongylophorus. This negative effect of endophytes on the ant’s cultivar could be the result of direct fungalefungal interaction or indirect reductions in the quality of leaves,...

Fungal-Fungal Interactions in Leaf-Cutting Ant Agriculture

Many organisms participate in symbiotic relationships with other organisms, yet studies of symbioses typically have focused on the reciprocal costs and benefits within a particular host-symbiont pair. Recent studies indicate that many ecological interactions involve alliances of symbionts acting together as mutualistic consortia against other consortia. Such interacting consortia are likely to ...

Physiological and Pathological Roles for MicroRNAs: Implications for Immunity Complications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding regulatory RNAs molecules with a size of approximately 22 nucleotides that are implicated in regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional regulatory levels. Inflammatory disorders especially autoimmune diseases (ADs) occur from an abnormal immune response of body against cells of their own specific tissues or multiple organ systems leading to ch...

Fungal Endophyte Diversity in Sarracenia

Fungal endophytes were isolated from 4 species of the carnivorous pitcher plant genus Sarracenia: S. minor, S. oreophila, S. purpurea, and S. psittacina. Twelve taxa of fungi, 8 within the Ascomycota and 4 within the Basidiomycota, were identified based on PCR amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA) with taxonomic identity as...

Endophyte Diversity Mediates Leaf Optical Properties

A single tropical plant species can harbour hundreds of endophyte species within its tissues. Otherwise, little is known about the relationship between endophyte colonization, leaf traits, and spectral properties of leaves. We explore those relationships on Coccoloba cereifera, a plant well known for its symbiotic properties. Endophyte richness in C. cereifera was statistically correlated with ...
