Role of Mixed Layer Depth in Kuroshio Extension Decadal Variability

چکیده
Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) have been suggested to play a crucial role decadal climate variability of North Pacific affecting global and marine ecosystem variability. By analyzing mixed layer heat budget, taking into account seasonality depth (MLD) variations, we here show for first time that KE SST front undergoes large variations mainly owing modulations effective capacity sensitivity fluxes during 1982–2015. More specifically, when becomes anomalously thick (shallow) south (north) front, it less (more) sensitive wintertime cooling. As result, is strengthened, with positive (negative) (north). A conservation model suggests MLD are due thermocline anomalies.

Decadal Variability of the Kuroshio Extension: Observations and an Eddy-Resolving Model Hindcast*
Low-frequency variability of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) is studied using observations and a multidecadal (1950–2003) hindcast by a high-resolution (0.1°), eddy-resolving, global ocean general circulation model for the Earth Simulator (OFES). In both the OFES hindcast and satellite altimeter observations, low-frequency sea surface height (SSH) variability in the North Pacific is high near the K...
متن کاملDecadal seesaw of the Central and Subtropical Mode Water formation associated with the Kuroshio Extension variability
Available Argo profiling float data from 2002 to 2011 were analyzed to examine the effect of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) current system variability on the formation of the Central Mode Water. Just north of the upstream portion of the KE at 140–152 E, formation of a lighter variety of the Central Mode Water in winter was active during the unstable period of the upstream KE in 2006–2009 and was r...
متن کاملCoupled atmosphere–mixed layer ocean response to ocean heat flux convergence along the Kuroshio Current Extension
The winter response of the coupled atmosphere–ocean mixed layer system to anomalous geostrophic ocean heat flux convergence in the Kuroshio Extension is investigated by means of experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an entraining ocean mixed layer model in the extra-tropics. The direct response consists of positive SST anomalies along the Kuroshio Extension and a ...
متن کاملProcesses that influence sea surface temperature and ocean mixed layer depth variability in a coupled model
A 50-year coupled atmosphere-ocean model integration is used to study sea surface temperature (SST) and mixed layer depth (h), and the processes which influence them. The model consists of an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an ocean mixed layer model in ice-free regions. The midlatitude SST variability is simulated fairly well, although the maximum variance is underestimated an...
متن کاملWind-Driven Shifts in the Latitude of the Kuroshio–Oyashio Extension and Generation of SST Anomalies on Decadal Timescales*
The causes of decadal variations of North Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are examined using a hindcast performed with an ocean general circulation model thermodynamically coupled to an atmospheric mixed layer model (OGCM–AML model) and forced by the time history of observed surface winds. The ‘‘shift’’ in North Pacific Ocean climate that occurred around 1976/77 is focused on since this...
