Robocentric map joining: Improving the consistency of EKF-SLAM

In this paper1 we study the Extended Kalman Filter approach to simultaneous localization and mapping (EKF-SLAM), describing its known properties and limitations, and concentrate on the filter consistency issue. We show that linearization of the inherent nonlinearities of both the vehicle motion and the sensor models frequently drives the solution of the EKF-SLAM out of consistency, specially in...

Graph Odometry

We address problem of determining edge weights on a graph using non-backtracking closed walks from a vertex. We show that the weights of all of the edges can be determined from any starting vertex exactly when the graph has minimum degree at least three. We also determine the minimum number of walks required to reveal all edge weights.

Social Odometry: Imitation Based Odometry in Collective Robotics

The improvement of odometry systems in collective robotics remains an important challenge for several applications. Social odometry is an online social dynamics which confers the robots the possibility to learn from the others. Robots neither share any movement constraint nor access to centralized information. Each robot has an estimate of its own location and an associated confidence level tha...

Rough Terrain Visual Odometry

We present an integrated system to localize a mobile robot in rough outdoor terrain using visual odometry. Our previous work [1] presented a visual odometry solution that estimates frame-to-frame motion from stereo cameras and integrated this incremental motion with a low cost GPS. We extend that work through the use of bundle adjustment over multiple frames. Bundle adjustment helps to reduce t...

MOMA: Visual Mobile Marker Odometry

In this paper, we present a cooperative odometry scheme based on the detection of mobile markers in line with the idea of cooperative positioning for multiple robots [1]. To this end, we introduce a simple optimization scheme that realizes visual mobile marker odometry via accurate fixed marker-based camera positioning and analyse the characteristics of errors inherent to the method compared to...
