This article presents a case study of riot grrrl music in School Rock franchise the Midwestern United States. It school as place which gender is bound up specific notions what it to play rock music, that directly inform constitutes popular within this context. The examines Riot Grrrl project using frame analysis, presenting and discussing three frames through was taught: punk ethics social justice. conflict played out disagreement between programme’s two male instructors. suggests multi-frame approaches teaching, including clashes may arise from conflicting frames, are effective disrupting musical-cultural status quo creating spaces students productively empathetically encounter unpopular marginalized musical ‘Others’.
