Ring-Waves Generated by Water Drops Impacting on Water Surfaces at Rest
Radar observations of the ocean surface can be affected by impacting raindrops. Ring-wave measurements are presented for drops of 2.2 and 2.8 mm in diameter impacting on fresh and salt water surfaces initially at rest. They are based on the observation of the mirror image of a sharp edge on the perturbed surface. The retrieved wave profiles show a rather stable characteristic wavenumber (0.2 mm...
متن کاملWater Drops on Surfaces
Water motion is a highly complex phenomenon. From ocean waves to raindrops, water is described by a wide range of shapes and is affected by a wide range of forces. This paper presents a physically-based method of modeling the latter phenomenon raindrops. This model can handle bodies of water with varying underlying terrain, as well as many different fluids, but cannot represent spray systems, w...
متن کاملWater waves generated by disturbances at an ice cover
This paper is concerned with two-dimensional unsteady motion of water waves generated by an initial disturbance created at an ice sheet covering the water. The ice cover is modeled as a thin elastic plate. Using linear theory, the problem is formulated as an initial value problem for the velocity potential describing the motion in the liquid. In the mathematical analysis, the Laplace and Fourie...
متن کاملWater waves generated by a moving bottom
Tsunamis are often generated by a moving sea bottom. This paper deals with the case where the tsunami source is an earthquake. The linearized water-wave equations are solved analytically for various sea bottom motions. Numerical results based on the analytical solutions are shown for the free-surface profiles, the horizontal and vertical velocities as well as the bottom pressure.
متن کاملStick-slip sliding of water drops on chemically heterogeneous surfaces.
We present a comprehensive study of water drops sliding down chemically heterogeneous surfaces formed by a periodic pattern of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes. Drops are found to undergo a stick-slip motion whose average speed is an order of magnitude smaller than that measured on a homogeneous surface having the same static contact angle. This motion is the result of the period...
