Ring Seismology of the Ice Giants Uranus and Neptune

Abstract We assess the prospect of using ring seismology to probe interiors ice giants Uranus and Neptune. do this by calculating normal-mode spectra for different interior models Neptune stellar oscillation code GYRE . These provide predictions where in these planets’ systems effects oscillations might be detected. find that f -mode resonances with azimuthal order m = 2 or 7 ≤ 19 fall among inner rings (6, 5, 4, α , β ) Uranus, while 12 tenuous ζ region. In addition, 6 13 may give structure Neptune’s Galle ring. also g middle outer planets. Although an orbiter is most likely required confirm association between any waves planetary normal modes, diversity implies identification just one two modes would eliminate a variety thus aid interpretation Voyager observations future spacecraft measurements.
