Right-hemisphere coherence to speech at pre-reading stages predicts reading performance one year later

چکیده
Neural entrainment to the low-frequency modulations of speech might contribute significantly reading acquisition. Still, no previous study has actually attempted establish a longitudinal link between them. The present tested Basque-speaking children twice: once before was formally instructed (t1; 5–6 years old) and after they had received full school year instruction (t2; 6–7 old). At t1, speech-brain coherence recorded via EEG. t2, in addition measure, performance assessed. Our results show that with larger pre-reading delta-band (<1 Hz) at right sites scalp performed better tasks one later. Overall, our provide preliminary support for relevant contribution right-hemisphere successful development point towards neural indexes as useful tools early detection developmental disorders.

Reading A Year Later
Two sets of measurements evaluated performance on typographically inverted text that students had learned to read 13 to IS months earlier. In one set, speed of reading was compared for pages read for the first and second times. Reread pages were read more quickly, thereby revealing an exceptional degree of memory at the pattern-analyzing level. In the second set of measurements, the readers cla...
متن کاملDeep dyslexia is right-hemisphere reading.
Two views exist concerning the proper interpretation of the form of acquired dyslexia known as deep dyslexia: (a) that it represents reading by a multiply damaged left hemisphere reading system; (b) that it represents reading which relies extensively on right-hemisphere orthographic and semantic processing. Price, Howard, Patterson, Warburton, Friston, and Frackowiak (1998) have recently report...
متن کاملChildhood aerobic fitness predicts cognitive performance one year later.
Aerobically fit children outperform less fit peers on cognitive control challenges that involve inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. The aim of this study was to determine whether, compared with less fit children, more fit 9- and 10-year-old pre-adolescents exhibit superior performance on a modified compatible and incompatible flanker task of cognitive control at the initial t...
متن کاملLanguage in the right cerebral hemisphere: contributions from reading studies.
Evidence for a right hemispheric involvement in language processing, in particular at the level of word meaning, has emerged within the last half century. Hemispheric functional specializations are dynamic; right hemispheric language participation significantly increases under certain conditions, such as during an epileptic seizure and during recovery from stroke. Interhemispheric connections v...
متن کاملA variety of reading disability associated with right hemisphere lesions.
Dyslexia, the apparently selective impairment in the ability to read words, or even individual letters, has been repeatedly described in association with left (major) hemisphere lesions. Verbal dyslexia, affecting the reading of words but not of isolated letters, may be characterized by paralexic errors (misreading of words). The paralexias may accompany similar (paraphasic) errors in spoken sp...
