Rice Stomatal Mega-Papillae Restrict Water Loss and Pathogen Entry

چکیده

Rice ( Oryza sativa ) is a water-intensive crop, and like other plants uses stomata to balance CO 2 uptake with water-loss. To identify agronomic traits related rice stomatal complexes, an anatomical screen of 64 Thai 100 global cultivars was undertaken. Epidermal outgrowths called papillae were identified on the subsidiary cells all cultivars. These also detected eight species genus but not any plant we surveyed. Our two that had “mega-papillae” so large or abundant their pores partially occluded; Kalubala Vee extra-large papillae, Dharia approximately twice normal number papillae. most accentuated flag leaves, mega-papillae detectable earlier forming leaves. Energy dispersive X-Ray spectrometry revealed silicon major component We studied potential function(s) by assessing gas exchange pathogen infection rates. Under saturating light conditions, bearing reduced conductance slower close re-open, photosynthetic assimilation significantly affected. Assessment F 3 hybrid population treated Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola indicated cell may aid in preventing bacterial leaf streak infection. results highlight as novel trait influences exchange, dynamics, defense against pathogens which propose could benefit performance future crops.

Aquaporins facilitate hydrogen peroxide entry into guard cells to mediate ABA- and pathogen-triggered stomatal closure.

Stomatal movements are crucial for the control of plant water status and protection against pathogens. Assays on epidermal peels revealed that, similar to abscisic acid (ABA), pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) flg22 requires the AtPIP2;1 aquaporin to induce stomatal closure. Flg22 also induced an increase in osmotic water permeability (Pf) of guard cell protoplasts through activation...

Salicaceae Endophytes Modulate Stomatal Behavior and Increase Water Use Efficiency in Rice

Bacterial and yeast endophytes isolated from the Salicaceae family have been shown to promote growth and alleviate stress in plants from different taxa. To determine the physiological pathways through which endophytes affect plant water relations, we investigated leaf water potential, whole-plant water use, and stomatal responses of rice plants to Salicaceae endophyte inoculation under CO2 enri...

Balancing Water Uptake and Loss through the Coordinated Regulation of Stomatal and Root Development

Root development is influenced by nutrient and water availabilities. Plants are able to adjust many attributes of their root in response to environmental signals including the size and shape of the primary root, lateral roots and root hairs. Here we investigated the response of roots to changes in the levels of leaf transpiration associated with altered stomatal frequency. We found that plants ...

Arsenic Tracking in Iranian Rice: Analysis of Agricultural Soil and Water, Unpolished Rice and White Rice

Since rice is a staple food most consumed world-wide, there have been increasing health concerns regarding exposure to arsenic through rice consumption. Several studies have reported the accumulation of arsenic in rice grains cultivated in regions with elevated levels of arsenic in groundwater or contaminated soil. Therefore the principal aim of this study was determining the amount of arsenic ...

FOUR LIPS and MYB88 conditionally restrict the G1/S transition during stomatal formation

Consistent with their valve-like function in shoot-atmosphere gas exchange, guard cells are smaller than other epidermal cells and usually harbour 2C DNA levels in diploid plants. The paralogous Arabidopsis R2R3 MYB transcription factors, FOUR LIPS and MYB88, ensure that stomata contain just two guard cells by restricting mitosis. The loss of both FLP and MYB88 function in flp myb88 double muta...
