Polymetric Rhythmic Feel for a Cognitive Drum Computer
This paper addresses a question about music cognition: how do we derive polymetric structures. A preference rule system is presented which is implemented into a drum computer. The preference rule system allows inferring local polymetric structures, like two-over-three and three-over-two. By analyzing the micro-timing of West African percussion music a timing pattern consisting of six pulses was...
متن کاملShifty Looping: meter-aware, non-repeating rhythmic loops
Shifty looping, like traditional looping, can generate metric material of arbitrary durations matching the timbres, expressive timings and other parameters of an input sample. Unlike traditional looping, it avoids exact repetition by continuously changing the loop points in real time. A simple analysis procedure semi-automatically marks large numbers of potential metrically correct loops.
متن کاملLook at the Beat, Feel the Meter: Top–Down Effects of Meter Induction on Auditory and Visual Modalities
Recent research has demonstrated top-down effects on meter induction in the auditory modality. However, little is known about these effects in the visual domain, especially without the involvement of motor acts such as tapping. In the present study, we aim to assess whether the projection of meter on auditory beats is also present in the visual domain. We asked 16 musicians to internally projec...
متن کاملStrictly Rhythm: Exploring the Effects of Identical Regions and Meter Induction in Rhythmic Similarity Perception
This paper is inspired in the ideas of rhythmical variation and evolution, which are connected to similarity and contrast. Two experiments on rhythm similarity are presented that examine the possible relations between objective metrics and human similarity ratings. We wanted to test the possible differences in similarity ratings when a beat was induced and when it was not. The experimental desi...
متن کاملRhythmic complexity and predictive coding: a novel approach to modeling rhythm and meter perception in music
Musical rhythm, consisting of apparently abstract intervals of accented temporal events, has a remarkable capacity to move our minds and bodies. How does the cognitive system enable our experiences of rhythmically complex music? In this paper, we describe some common forms of rhythmic complexity in music and propose the theory of predictive coding (PC) as a framework for understanding how rhyth...
