Rheology of Metasedimentary Rocks at the Base of the Subduction Seismogenic Zone
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Arosa Zone, Central Alps, represents a Cretaceous to Paleogene fossil subduction interface from paleodepths of 10 >35 km. Metasedimentary schists directly below preserved seismogenic zone exhibit viscous (foliations, folds, and lineations) brittle (crack-seal quartz ± calcite veins) deformation features. Si-in-phengite barometry published temperature estimates yield metamorphism conditions 0.8–0.9 GPa 300–350°C for an albite-rich pelitic schist 0.9 420°C calcite-rich calcareous schist. Petrography, microprobe element maps, electron backscattered diffraction data constrain the modal mineralogies, microtextures, active mechanisms these schists. There is evidence minor crystal plasticity in both rocks However, most prominent microstructures formed during pressure solution creep albite. Pressure was activated due pinning by ubiquitous fine grained phengite. Rheologic modeling indicates that albite can accommodate tectonic strain rates at stresses <30 MPa weaker than dislocation same conditions; results are consistent with our microstructural observations. slow slip either or creep, would need be >>100 MPa. Triple oxygen isotope veins combined suggest metamorphic mafic source vein filling accommodating fluids, indicating dehydration subducting oceanic lithosphere likely provided fluids facilitated rocks.

Rheological flow laws can be obtained from studies using multi-anvil high-pressure systems with synchrotron-based piezometers and strain metrics. The high flux X-ray source provides minute-scale time resolution with accurate measurement of diffraction patterns and direct sample images. Measurements of length changes with an accuracy of one part in 104 are being developed and will provide a new ...

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Experimental studies of mineralogical assemblages of metasedimentary rocks at Earth’s mantle transition zone conditions
Metasedimentary rocks, a major component of the continental crust, are abundant within ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic terranes related to continental collisions. The presence of diamond, coesite, and relics of decompressed minerals in these rocks suggests that they were subducted to a depth of more than 150–250 km. Reconnaissance experiments at 9–12 GPa and 1000–1300 C on compositions co...
