Revisiting Non-specific Syndromic Surveillance

چکیده

Infectious disease surveillance is of great importance for the prevention major outbreaks. Syndromic aims at developing algorithms which can detect outbreaks as early possible by monitoring data sources allow to capture occurrences a certain disease. Recent research mainly focuses on specific, known diseases, putting focus definition pattern under surveillance. Until now, only little effort has been devoted what we call non-specific syndromic surveillance, i.e., use all available detecting any kind outbreaks, including infectious diseases are unknown beforehand. In this work, revisit published approaches and present set simple statistical modeling techniques serve benchmarks more elaborate machine learning approaches. Our experimental comparison established synthetic real in injected shows that these already achieve very competitive results often outperform algorithms.

Syndromic Surveillance

Syndromic surveillance is the regular collection, analysis, and interpretation of real-time and near-real-time indicators of diseases and other outbreaks by public health organizations. Motivated by the threat of bioterrorism, syndromic surveillance systems are being developed and implemented around the world. In a 2004 systematic review of publicly available information, 115 surveillance syste...

Interpreting specific and general respiratory indicators in syndromic surveillance

Introduction Public Health England (PHE) uses syndromic surveillance systems to monitor for seasonal increases in respiratory illness. Respiratory illnesses create a considerable burden on health care services and therefore identifying the timing and intensity of peaks of activity is important for public health decision-making. Furthermore, identifying the incidence of specific respiratory path...

The importance of age-specific data in routine syndromic surveillance

Introduction When monitoring public health incidents using syndromic surveillance systems, Public Health England (PHE) uses the age of the presenting patient as a key indicator to further assess the severity, impact of the incident, and to provide intelligence on the likely cause. However the age distribution of cases is usually not considered until after unusual activity has been identified in...
