Management of patellofemoral pain syndrome.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is the most common cause of knee pain in the outpatient setting. It is caused by imbalances in the forces controlling patellar tracking during knee flexion and extension, particularly with overloading of the joint. Risk factors include overuse, trauma, muscle dysfunction, tight lateral restraints, patellar hypermobility, and poor quadriceps flexibility. Typic...
متن کاملPatellofemoral Pain Syndrome in Athletes
Patellofemoral pain is seen frequently in young and physically active people. The incidence in primary care for the young adult age is about 10 to 12 new cases per 1000 patients per year, while in sports medicine practice, its prevalence may well be around 25%1. The palette of complaints is varied, from mild short-term pain to long-term and load-dependent pain, leading to functional restriction...
متن کاملA systematic review of physical interventions for patellofemoral pain syndrome.
OBJECTIVE Physical interventions (nonpharmacological and nonsurgical) are the mainstay of treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Physiotherapy is the most common of all physical interventions and includes specific vastus medialis obliquus or general quadriceps strengthening and/or realignment procedures (tape, brace, stretching). These treatments appear to be based on sound theoreti...
متن کاملGluteal muscle activity and patellofemoral pain syndrome: a systematic review.
OBJECTIVE There is growing evidence to support the association of gluteal muscle strength deficits in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and the effectiveness of gluteal strengthening when treating PFPS. In additiona, an impressive body of work evaluating gluteal electromyography (EMG) has recently emerged, further supporting the importance of gluteal muscle function in PFPS. ...
