Review of Cr-Free Coatings for the Corrosion Protection of Aluminum Aerospace Alloys

Aluminum alloys are known to have many advantages (e.g., light weight and low cost) but they not immune corrosion. So, it is important assess their corrosion behavior, in particular under atmospheric conditions. To protect aluminum against corrosion, paints generally applied onto the materials. Corrosion protection aerospace industry consists of a conversion or anodized coating, an inhibited primer, top-coat. Chromate coating (CCC) primers containing chromate pigments been widely used over last decades. However, new environmental regulations led major changes for protection. By limiting prohibiting some chemicals, instance Cr(VI), European regulation REACH (Regulation on Registration Evaluation, Authorization Restriction Chemicals) has induced finishing processes conversion, chromic acid anodizing, sealing). Interesting results obtained while seeking replacements example, with incorporation cerium, lithium salt, nanocontainers loaded inhibitors organic coatings. For several years, hybrid sol–gel coatings able replace pre-treatment primer steps development, showing interesting results. New prospects future involve use photopolymerization reduce energy-intensive heat treatment needed technology.
