Reverse osmosis membrane biofouling: causes, consequences and countermeasures

چکیده

Abstract Biofouling has been referred to as “the Achilles heel” of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology; the main cause being polyamide RO membranes lack chlorine tolerance. increases operating cost water treatment by increasing system feed pressure (i.e., energy demand) and cleaning frequency, which downtime reduces useful life. For waters with known high biofouling potential, plant designs also may require more extensive pretreatment, capital costs well footprint a desalination plant. It is from literature that three keys fending off in systems and/or recovering once it takes root include (1) understanding site-specific processes governing biofilm formation, (2) implementing effective pretreatment ahead membranes, (3) monitoring enable proactive cleaning. Herein, we present four case studies seawater, municipal wastewater, brackish groundwater industrial wastewater. Next, describe what about causes consequences bacterial formation growth through process level model. Finally, review common control methods including pre-treatment, chemical most strategies for systems.

Characterization and effect of biofouling on polyamide reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane surfaces.

Biofouling is a major reason for flux decline in the performance of membrane-based water and wastewater treatment plants. Initial biochemical characterization of biofilm formation potential and biofouling on two commercially available membrane surfaces from FilmTec Corporation were investigated without filtration in laboratory rotating disc reactor systems. These surfaces were polyamide aromati...

Nitric oxide treatment for the control of reverse osmosis membrane biofouling.

Biofouling remains a key challenge for membrane-based water treatment systems. This study investigated the dispersal potential of the nitric oxide (NO) donor compound, PROLI NONOate, on single- and mixed-species biofilms formed by bacteria isolated from industrial membrane bioreactor and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The potential of PROLI NONOate to control RO membrane biofouling was also ex...

Effect of Organoclay on the Performance of Reverse Osmosis Membrane

This study investigated the effect of Cloisite15A (C15A) organoclay in the substrate layer on the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The substrate of the RO membranes was modified using different loading of C15A (ranging from 0.3 - 0.7 wt%) within polysulfone (PSf) substrate and the polyamide (PA) selective layer was formed on the top. Effect of the modified substrate layer on the w...

The Effect of Osmotic Dehydration on Reverse Osmosis Membrane Performance

Akin type (asymmetric) reverse osmosis membranes undergo an irreversible osmotic dehydration upon coming into contact (skin side) with salt solutions. The extent of consequent changes (in appearance; decrease in linear dimension, water flux and salt rejection) are dependent on the salt concentration. These observations are correlated with the expected morphological changes taking place duri...

Novel Membrane Materials for Reverse Osmosis Desalination

The use of solvents in desalination processes limits the use of certain materials in the construction of the reverse osmosis membranes. Therefore now the research effort has focused on improving new materials. In particular, nanostructured materials will probably form the basis for new reverse osmosis membrane materials. This study makes a review of the new materials used for the construction o...
