Mercury, lead, and cadmium are among the most toxic carcinogenic heavy metal ions (HMIs), posing serious threats to sustainability of aquatic ecosystems public health. There is an urgent need remove these from water by a cheap but green process. Traditional methods have insufficient removal efficiency reusability. Structurally robust, large surface-area adsorbents functionalized with high-selectivity affinity HMIs attractive filter materials. Here, adsorbent prepared vulcanization polyacrylonitrile (PAN), nitrogen-rich polymer, reported, giving rise PAN-S nanoparticles cyclic ?-conjugated backbone electronic conductivity. can be coated on ultra-robust melamine (ML) foam simple dipping drying. In agreement hard/soft acid/base theory, N- S-containing soft Lewis bases strong binding Hg2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, extraordinary capture performance stability. Furthermore, used filters, when collected electrochemically biased in recycling bath, release into bath electrodeposit counter-electrode as metallic Hg0, Pb0, Cu0, Cd0, PAN-S@ML then reused at least 6 times new. The electronically conductive fabricated cheaply holds promise for scale-up applications.
