Retrieval of Rain Rates for Tropical Cyclones From Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

نویسندگان

چکیده

The purpose of this study was to develop a method for retrieving the rain rate from C-band (∼5.3 GHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images during tropical cyclones (TCs). Seven dual-polarized (vertical-vertical [VV] and vertical-horizontal [VH]) Sentinel-1 (S-1) SAR were acquired in interferometric-wide (IW) swath mode Satellite Hurricane Observation Campaign. These collocated with rates measured by Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometers onboard National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration aircraft. Wind speeds retrieved VH-polarized using geophysical model function (GMF) S1IW.NR. We determined difference between normalized cross section (NRCS) based on VV-polarized predicted NRCS derived CMOD5.N forced wind images. Rain cells identified as regions where greater than 0.5 dB or smaller −0.5 dB. found that decreased speed increased increasing rate. Based these findings, we developed an empirical S-1 retrieval TC, naming it CRAIN_S1. validation CRAIN_S1 results Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission data resulted root mean square error 0.58 mm/hr correlation 0.89. This provides alternate monitoring utilizing fine spatial resolution.

Rain retrieval over land from X-band spaceborne synthetic aperture radar: a model study

Numerous studies conducted as part of the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) program have demonstrated the benefits of space-borne precipitation measurements. The NASA Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) is an outgrowth of TRMM that will provide improved precipitation measurements and extend those measurements to higher latitudes. GPM satellite will carry a microwave imager coupled wit...

Parallel Matching of Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

This paper presents an MPI-parallelized version of a matching algorithm for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. First the necessity for automated matching and the chosen algorithm are outlined briefly, and the algorithmic structure and the applied parallelization strategy are then presented and discussed. Performance results on a Cray T3D and a PowerChallenge from SGI are given, showing unex...

sea target detection in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar images

study on polsar target detection essentially requires the cattering information and polarimetric statistical data. theoretical analysis shows that some terms of the second order scattering matrices such as coherence and covariance matrix clearly show the differences between nonsymmetrical man-made objects and natural clatters which being reflection symmetric. using the model derived from these ...

Wind retrieval from synthetic aperture radar - an overview

This paper represents a consensus on the state-of-the-art in wind retrieval using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), after the SEASAR 2012 workshop "Advances in SAR Oceanography" hosted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Norwegian Space Centre in Tromsø, Norway 18–22 June 2012. We document the recent advances of the methodologies, which are capitalizing on the improved capabilities of the ...
