Retraction Stigma and its Communication via Retraction Notices

Abstract Retraction of published research is laudable as a post-publication self-correction science but undesirable an indicator grave violations and publication ethics. Given its various adverse consequences, retraction has stigmatizing effect both in beyond the academic community. However, little theoretical attention been paid to nature retraction. Drawing on stigma theories informed by retraction, we advance conceptualization stigma. We define discrediting evaluation professional competence ethics entities held accountable for Accordingly, identify seven core dimensions stigma, consider functional justifications at social psychological levels, distinguish targets stakeholders. In view central role notices, also discuss how communicated via notices authors may exercise their power manipulate force notices. conclude recommending framework future pointing out several directions that this can take.
