Restricted Geographic Sampling Yields Low Parasitism Rates but Surprisingly Diverse Host Associations in Avian Lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from South Texas

چکیده
South Texas is a highly variable region encompassing multiple habitat types and harboring wide diversity of organisms. However, the parasite fauna in this poorly known, especially for avian ectoparasites such as lice. To better understand louse host associations Texas, we examined total 507 birds chewing Lice were morphologically identified to genus phylogenetic analysis was performed using one mitochondrial (COI) two nuclear (18S rRNA EF-1α) genes. Of examined, 69 (13.5%) parasitized by lice resulting 63 across 45 bird species, 29 which previously unrecorded. The predominant taxa encountered during study included most diverse genera, Myrsidea Brueelia. Molecular analyses revealed 21 distinct genetic lineages, 17 are associated with novel may represent new species. This represents first extensive examination relationships reveals that there still much be learned about ectoparasite New World.

Reduced taxonomic richness of lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) in diving birds.
Avian lice occupy different habitats in the host plumage that the physical environment outside the host body may affect in several ways. Interactions between host plumage and water may be an important source of such effects. Here, we use a comparative approach to examine the effect of a host's diving behavior on the taxonomic richness of its lice. Louse genera richness was significantly lower i...
متن کاملDramatically elevated rate of mitochondrial substitution in lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera).
Few estimates of relative substitution rates, and the underlying mutation rates, exist between mitochondrial and nuclear genes in insects. Previous estimates for insects indicate a 2-9 times faster substitution rate in mitochondrial genes relative to nuclear genes. Here we use novel methods for estimating relative rates of substitution, which incorporate multiple substitutions, and apply these ...
متن کاملComparative ecology of Neotropical bird lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera)
1. Data are presented comprising the first quantitative survey of lice from Neotropical birds. The data were collected in the Andean foothills of south-eastern Peru using a novel scheme for quantitative sampling of ectoparasites from freshly killed hosts. 2. In total, 685 birds representing 127 species in 26 families were sampled for lice; 327 (47.7%) birds were parasitized, with a mean intensi...
متن کاملAn annotated checklist of parasitic lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from the Galápagos Islands.
We list all described species and subspecies of parasitic lice from the Galápagos Islands, based on literature and specimen records. A total of eight families, 47 genera, and 104 species and subspecies of parasitic lice are listed, of which 26 are new species records and eight are new genus records. Also, we report 17 new host-louse associations. The checklist includes 17 endemic species (16 fr...
متن کاملDifferences in straggling rates between two genera of dove lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) reinforce population genetic and cophylogenetic patterns.
Differences in dispersal abilities have been implicated for causing disparate evolutionary patterns between Columbicola and Physconelloides lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera). However, no study has documented straggling (when lice are found on atypical hosts) rates within these lineages. We used the fact that the Galapagos Hawk, Buteo galapagoensis (Gould) (Falconiformes) feeds on the Galapagos Dove ...
