Restoration ecophysiology: an ecophysiological approach to improve restoration strategies and outcomes in severely disturbed landscapes

چکیده

As human activities destroy and degrade the world's ecosystems at unprecedented scales, there is a growing need for evidence-based methods ecological restoration if we are to preserve biodiversity ecosystem services. Mining represents one of most severe anthropogenic disturbances, often necessitating intensive intervention restore basic attributes native ecosystems. Despite examples successful mine-site restoration, re-establishing vegetation in these degraded landscapes remains significant challenge. Plant ecophysiology—the study interactions between plants environment—can provide useful framework evaluating guiding restoration. By understanding physiological mechanisms that allow establish persist highly disturbed environments, practitioners may be able improve outcomes. Specifically, plant ecophysiology can inform site preparation selection material projects, aid monitoring progress by providing additional insight into performance, ultimately our ability predict trajectories. Here, review challenges benefits integrating an ecophysiological perspective Western Australia, global hotspot mining operations. Using case studies from region's diverse ecosystems, illustrate how approach guide some severely landscapes. With careful species traits consideration specific environmental conditions stressors within site, outlined here has potential strategies across

Ecological Restoration Strategies for Cattle Ranching Landscapes of the Azuero

Background: Ever the dominant forest type along the Pacific coast of Central America, the tropical dry forest ecosystem is now the most severely endangered in the Neotropics, only 1.7% of the original cover remains in Central America (CalvoAlvarado et al., 2009). The Azuero Peninsula of Panama has lost most of its tropical dry forest due to the expansion of the agricultural frontier, which bega...

Ecological Restoration Strategies for Cattle Ranching Landscapes of the Azuero

Background: The tropical dry forest, the most endangered ecosystem in the Neotropics, is threatened by the dominance of extensive conventional cattle ranching. The consequences of this land use system are particularly evident in the dry forest ecosystem of Panama’s Azuero Peninsula. Deforestation and soil degradation have impaired ecosystem services, which are necessary to support ranching and ...

Ecological Restoration Strategies for Cattle Ranching Landscapes of the Azuero

Background: The Azuero Peninsula, while home to Panama’s famous folkloric cultural traditions, is also considered the most deforested region of the country. Degradation of the highly endangered dry tropical forest of the Azuero is due to conventional agriculture and livestock practices that promote hostile, treeless landscapes. In particular, extensive cattle ranching, which includes the planti...

Smart load shedding and distributed generation resources rescheduling to improve distribution system restoration performance

After a permanent fault occurs if it is not possible to supply the load in the network, the optimal load restoration scheme allows the system to restoration the load with the lowest exit cost, the lowest load interruption, and in the shortest possible time. This article introduces a new design called Smart Load Shedding, abbreviated SLS. In the proposed SLS scheme, the types of devices in smart...

Harnessing Natural Recovery Processes to Improve Restoration Outcomes: An Experimental Assessment of Sponge-Mediated Coral Reef Restoration

BACKGROUND Restoration is increasingly implemented to reestablish habitat structure and function following physical anthropogenic disturbance, but scientific knowledge of effectiveness of methods lags behind demand for guidelines. On coral reefs, recovery is largely dependent on coral reestablishment, and substratum stability is critical to the survival of coral fragments and recruits. Concrete...
