Responses of Freshwater Planarian Girardia tigrina to Fipronil-Based Insecticide: Survival, Behavioral and Physiological Endpoints

چکیده
Fipronil is a pyrazole insecticide used to control undesirable insect populations. Due its large-scale application, there the potential for surface waters’ contamination, with toxic action non-target organisms, and consequent impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Planarians are invertebrates these insecticides. They widespread in tropical freshwaters have been proposed as good candidates assess effects of freshwater systems contaminated by Thus, present study aims evaluate sublethal concentrations fipronil-based that may affect planarian physiology. After chronic exposure Regent 800 WG®, significant decrease locomotor velocity (LOEC—6.25 mg·L−1), regeneration auricles photoreceptors (LOEC—3.13 reproduction (fecundity—LOEC 12.5 mg·L−1) were observed. The results our demonstrate long-term can compromise while reinforcing need better investigation complementary parameters (such behavior, regeneration, reproduction) more accurate risk assessment commercial pesticide toxicity systems.

Planarians in pharmacology: parthenolide is a specific behavioral antagonist of cocaine in the planarian Girardia tigrina.
Planarians are traditional animal models in developmental and regeneration biology. Recently, these organisms are arising as vertebrate-relevant animal models in neuropharmacology. Using an adaptation of published behavioral protocols, we have described the alleviation of cocaine-induced planarian seizure-like movements (pSLM) by a naturally-occurring sesquiterpene lactone, parthenolide. Intere...
متن کاملEffects of a textile azo dye on mortality, regeneration, and reproductive performance of the planarian, Girardia tigrina
BACKGROUND Many dyes can be considered emerging contaminants. The most widely used dyes belong to the class of azo compounds, some of which are known to have toxic and genotoxic properties. They are used in great quantities in textile activities and are of environmental concern because of their potential discharge in water. Planarians have been successfully used as test organisms in hazard eval...
متن کاملPlanarian Phototactic Assay Reveals Differential Behavioral Responses Based on Wavelength
Planarians are free-living aquatic flatworms that possess a well-documented photophobic response to light. With a true central nervous system and simple cerebral eyes (ocelli), planarians are an emerging model for regenerative eye research. However, comparatively little is known about the physiology of their photoreception or how their behavior is affected by various wavelengths. Most phototact...
متن کاملBehavioral Avoidance - Will Physiological Insecticide Resistance Level of Insect Strains Affect Their Oviposition and Movement Responses?
Agricultural organisms, such as insect herbivores, provide unique opportunities for studies of adaptive evolutionary processes, including effects of insecticides on movement and oviposition behavior. In this study, Brassica leaves were treated with one of two non-systemic insecticides and exposed to two individual strains (referred to as single or double resistance) of diamondback moth (Plutell...
متن کاملBehavioral responses of the bed bug to insecticide residues.
The recent resurgence of bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L. (Heteroptera: Cimicidae), has increased the demand for information about effective control tactics. Several studies have focused on determining the susceptibility of bed bug populations to insecticides. However, behavioral responses of bed bugs to insecticide residues could influence their efficacy. The behavioral responses of bed bugs to ...
