Resource-Efficient HAPS-RIS Enabled Beyond-Cell Communications

In the future, urban regions will encounter a massive number of capacity-hungry devices. Relying solely on terrestrial networks for serving all UEs be cost-ineffective approach. Consequently, with anticipated supply and demand mismatch, several unsupported. To offer service to left-out UEs, we employ an energy-efficient cost-effective beyond-cell communications approach, which uses reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) high-altitude platform station (HAPS). Particularly, unsupported connected dedicated control (CS) through RIS-mounted HAPS. A novel resource-efficient optimization problem is formulated that maximizes while minimizing total power consumed by CS RIS. Since resulting mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), low-complexity two-stage algorithm developed. Numerical results demonstrate proposed outperforms benchmark approach in terms percentage resource-efficiency (RE). Also, show more sensitive transmit at than HAPS size.
