Resource Allocation for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer Systems: A Tutorial Overview

Over the last decade, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has become a practical promising solution for connecting recharging battery-limited devices due to significant advances in low-power electronics technology communications techniques. To realize promised potentials, advanced resource allocation design plays decisive role revealing, understanding, exploiting intrinsic rate–energy tradeoff capitalizing on dual use of radio frequency (RF) signals charging communication. In this article, we provide comprehensive tutorial overview SWIPT from perspective design. The fundamental concepts, system architectures, RF energy harvesting (EH) models are introduced. particular, three commonly adopted EH models, namely, linear model, nonlinear saturation circuit-based characterized discussed. Then, typical setup, establish generalized framework that subsumes conventional problems as special cases. Subsequently, elaborate relevant tools optimization theory exploit them solving representative systems with without perfect channel state (CSI) available at transmitter, respectively. associated technical challenges insights also highlighted. Furthermore, discuss several exciting future research directions intertwined cutting-edge communication technologies, such intelligent reflecting surfaces, unmanned aerial vehicles, mobile edge computing, federated learning, machine learning.
