Resolving ambiguity: Broadening the consideration of risky decision making over adolescent development

چکیده

• Risk-taking is a multifactorial construct that can be dissociated into economic risk and ambiguity, each supported by distinct neural mechanisms. How ambiguity aversion develops over adolescence remains largely unknown. Ambiguity relate to everyday risk-taking in different ways. We propose renewed focus on research adolescent risk-taking. Popular culture often portrays as period of peak risk-taking, but developmental trend not consistently found across laboratory studies. Instead, meta -analytic evidence shows while adolescents take more risks compared adults, children actually similar levels risk. Furthermore, trajectories vary measures decision making risky behavior. Indeed, the psychological concept “risk” multifactorial, such its factors exhibit trajectories. Here, we examine how preference, or propensity gamble uncertain outcomes with known probabilities, from unknown probabilities -- may differentially influence making. Economic engages mechanisms – both adults relates However, date, it elusive adolescence, relative paucity work limits conclusions drawn. should consider component within This will set stage for future preferences an explanatory mechanism behaviors beyond taking, learning prosocial

Adolescent risky decision-making: Neurocognitive development of reward and control regions

Recent models hypothesize that adolescents' risky behavior is the consequence of increased sensitivity to rewards in the ventral medial (VM) prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the ventral striatum (VS), paired with immature cognitive control abilities due to slow maturation of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and lateral PFC. We tested this hypothesis with fMRI using a gambling task in which...

Decision making in forest management with consideration of stochastic prices

The optimal harvesting policy is calculated as a function of the entering stock, the price state, the harvesting cost, and the rate of interest in the capital market. In order to determine the optimal harvest schedule, the growth function and stumpage price process are estimated for the Swedish mixed species forests. The stumpage price is assumed to follow a stochastic Markov process. A stoch...

Risky decision making among adolescents

In this report, we analyze adolescent risk-taking from a behavioral decision-making perspective, with respect to the following questions: •Why is adolescent risky decision making important? •What is rational, adaptive, or good decision-making for adolescents (i.e., normative approaches)? •What are the main explanatory models of adolescent risk taking? •What are the key data (i.e., those data th...

Pubertal Development and Peer Influence on Risky Decision Making

Adolescents engage in more risky behavior when they are with peers and show, on average, heightened susceptibility to peer influence relative to children and adults. However, individual differences in susceptibility to peer influence are not well understood. The current study examined whether the effect of peers on adolescents’ risky decision making was moderated by pubertal status. Participant...

An fMRI Study of Risky Decision Making: The Role of Mental Preparation and Conflict

Introduction: The current study aimed to elucidate the role of preparatory cognitive control in decision making and its neural correlates using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). To this effect, by employing a series of new cognitive tasks, we assessed the role of preparatory cognitive control in monetary (risky) decision making. Methods: The participants had to decide between a...
