Reservoir-Induced Land Deformation: Case Study from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Nile River stretches from south to north throughout the Basin (NRB) in Northeast Africa. Ethiopia, where Blue originates, has begun construction of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which will be used generate electricity. However, impact GERD on land deformation caused by significant water relocation not been rigorously considered scientific research. In this study, we develop a novel approach for predicting large-scale induced reservoir. We also investigate limitations using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow On (GRACE-FO) mission detect GERD-induced deformation. simulated three scenarios related filling expected reservoir volume, 70 km3, 5-, 10-, 15-year scenarios. results indicated: (i) trends downward vertical displacement estimated at −17.79 ± 0.02, −8.90 0.09, −5.94 0.05 mm/year, scenarios, respectively; (ii) western (eastern) parts are move toward reservoir’s center +0.98 0.01 (−0.98 0.01), +0.48 0.00 (−0.48 0.00), +0.33 (−0.33 0.00) under 10- strategies, (iii) northern part is moving southward +1.28 +0.64 0.01, +0.43 while southern northward −3.75 0.04, −1.87 −1.25 during examined (iv) GRACE-FO can only 15% produced Methods demonstrated study provide insights into possible impacts impoundment surface deformation, adopted project or similar future dam plans.

Management Scenarios of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Their Impacts under Recent and Future Climates

Close to the border with Sudan, Ethiopia is currently building the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa with a storage volume corresponding to approximately 1.5 years of the mean discharges of the Blue Nile. This endeavor is controversially debated in the public and the scientific literature. Contributing to this discussion, by shading some light on climate change issues, an eco-hydrolog...

Issues Problems of Sedimentation in Reservoir Siazakh Dam Case Study

Sedimentation in reservoirs lowers the quality of consumed water, reduce the volume of reservoir, lowers the controllable amount of flood, increases the risk of water overflow during possible floods and the risk of reversal and reduction of dam's useful life. So in all stages of dam establishment such as cognitive studies, phase-1 studies of design, control, construction and maintenance, the pr...

Investigating the Effect of Dam Construction on Land Use Change and Land Cover in the Period 1991 to 2020 (Case Study: Gotvand-Khuzestan Dam)

Humans are always trying to change land to use natural resources to meet their needs. One of the land use changes that take place in order to benefit from sustainable water resources is dam construction. Dam construction has many positive and negative consequences for the environment from the beginning to use. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Gotvand Dam on the probl...

Slow Structural Deformation Monitoring Using Locata - a Case Study at the Tumut Pond Dam

A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a very popular technology for „24/7‟ monitoring of slow structural deformation. Unfortunately a GNSS is dependent on the number as well as geometric distribution of the available satellites, and the precision may therefore vary at different observation times. On the other hand, Locata Corporation‟s positioning technology, known as “Locata”, provide...
