Reproductive effort affects subsequent horn growth in sexually dimorphic male ungulates

چکیده

Abstract Trade-offs between reproductive effort and subsequent growth in males are not well explored, despite their relevance questions of individual energy allocation. Regarding the sexual secondary characters polygynous breeding male mammals, indeed, no conclusive studies exist. We investigated Alpine ibex ( Capra ) relationship behavioral effort, current horn size, growth. While controlling for age, evidence was found during rut being affected by size. On other hand, significantly decreased age-specific following summer. Our study provides that is traded against investments reproduction a mammal. It bears important implications understanding allocation various life-history components evolutionary ecology characters.

Patterns of reproductive effort in male ungulates

In ungulates, males and females have contrasting life histories, as usually only the females raise the young. How reproductive effort in males varies with individual level and population level characteristics has received little attention in the literature. Using published information on direct (weight loss during the rut) and indirect (rutrelated changes in activity budgets, fighting frequency...

Allometry and sexually dimorphic traits in male anurans.

Allometry of secondary sexual traits has been the subject of recent debate, and the generality of positive allometry and its association with sexual selection have been recently questioned. Whereas some studies suggest an almost universal positive allometry for traits under sexual selection and isometry or a negative allometry for traits not under such pressure, other studies argue that this pa...

Male and Female Growth in Sexually Dimorphic Species: Harmony, Conflict, or Both?

In most vertebrates, males and females are nearly identical in morphology during early development, but, as a result of highly divergent growth, achieve often remarkably different adult morphologies. Although numerous studies have documented selection pressures that favor distinct morphologies of adult males and females, the mechanisms that enable the initially genetically identical sexes to en...

STAT5 signaling in sexually dimorphic gene expression and growth patterns.

The past 10 years have seen enormous advances in our understanding of how cytokine signals are mediated intracellularly. Of particular significance was the discovery of a family of seven Signal Transducer and Activators of Transcription (STAT) proteins. Each of these has now been studied in detail, and appropriate gene-disrupted mouse models are available for all except STAT2 (Leonard and O'She...

Regulatory mechanisms of growth hormone secretion are sexually dimorphic.

Sexually dimorphic growth hormone (GH) secretory pattern is important in the determination of gender-specific patterns of growth and metabolism in rats. Whether GH secretion in humans is also sexually dimorphic and the neuroendocrine mechanisms governing this potential difference are not fully established. We have compared pulsatile GH secretion profiles in young men and women in the baseline s...
