Repeated attempts, phonetic errors, and syllabifications in a case study:Evidence of impaired transfer from phonology to articulatory planning

Background: In aphasia, impairments affecting stages after lexical access have been subdivided into three types: 1. specifying a sequence of phonemes (the reproduction variety conduction CA); 2. holding on to these representations during articulatory planning short-term memory (STM) and 3. Impairments integrated articulatory/motor plans for clusters (apraxia speech, AoS). Models speech production, however, suggest more articulated possibilities (i.e., different subtypes impairments).Aims: We investigated the impairment in person with aphasia whose preliminary assessment revealed mixed characteristics, combining features typically used identify CA – phonological errors across tasks repeated attempts at target AoS phonetic word dysfluencies (phoneme elongations syllabifications). Our hypothesis was that there difficulty transferring information from an (intact) output buffer planning. Slow/noisy transfer would predict dysfluencies, selecting motor programs, but also (RA) revising face intact feedback original representations. This predicts effects position complexity.Method Procedure: tested CS’s nonword repetition, reading, picture naming. quantified non-lexical errors, attempts, syllabifications. assessed frequency, length, phoneme position, syllabic complexity.Results: CS made similar tasks, consistent post-lexical impairment. His RAs most often built up correct fragments and/or previously incorrect conduite d’approche. He produced later positions, longer words. However, inconsistent decay buffer, did not increase length.
