Remembering and Re-membering Home: Asynchronicity as Postcolonial Poetics in 21st Century Southeast Asian Diasporic Narratives

In examining the dialectic between diasporic subject’s homes—both absent and adopted home—this monograph maps out ways through which collective memory postmemory mediate traumatic experiences of dislocation. The literary cinematic representations mobility in Hannah Espia’s film Transit (2013), Clement Baloup’s graphic novel Vietnamese Memories Lian Gouw’s Only a Girl reveal dual-displacement that characterizes experience 21st century—a displacement both space time. This dual-displacement, is result inability to reduce “many temporalworlds” they live in, is, “the past motherland . present often precarious, an uncertain future,” simultaneously into one, constitutes migrant’s out-of-sync subjectivity (Kohn 109). manifested what I call poetics “asynchronicity” undergirds narratives these Southeast Asian—specifically Filipino, Indonesian, Vietnamese—stories. Asynchronicity, as postcolonial poetics, enables thesetexts act counter-memories, offering alternative understanding multi-faceted identity belonging place(s) world. By compelling readers remember re-member—that engage conscious re-building one’s lifeworld using bricks individual memory—new emerge wherein dislocated subject finds themselves included history written on their own terms, one transcends colonial grand have once delimited identities.
