Relationships and sexuality education: Key research informing New Zealand curriculum policy

Background and purpose: In 2020, the New Zealand Ministry of Education updated national curriculum policy for sexuality education, broadening focus to ‘relationships education’ strengthening guidance both primary (Years 1–8) secondary 9–13) schools. The resulting guides detail how schools might take a ‘whole school approach’ this area, including dedicated time at all levels compulsory schooling. Methods conclusions: This article summarises key thinking research that informs latest update provides justification content in policy. Significant aspects include framework based on Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty Waitangi), Indigenous knowledges human rights; attention issues bullying inclusion; responsibility address gender sexual diversity programmes whole school. background paper discusses evidence update, as well context precede these changes.
