Related Variety of Regional Smart Specialization Strategies

Purpose: The paper seeks to find the related variety of smart specialization strategies in European regions. Design/Methodology/Approach: We apply product space methodology Hidalgo et al. (2007) identify most frequent occurrences industry, scientific or policy domains regional innovation and construct a matrix their co-occurrences. Findings: Although some extent regions utilize unrelated variety, i.e., homogeneous industry sections, domains, benefit from cross-linkages between sections (related variety). This latter may be grouped into two interconnected domains: (1) quality life well-being, including high-tech products that facilitate various spheres social economic life; (2) sustainable urban development with cities, green transportation, energy conservation effectiveness. Practical Implications: Tracing specializations an understanding localization urbanization economies mechanisms behind entrepreneurial discovery processes. Moreover, results can show which differentiate themselves others. Originality/Value: has not been applied date. Based on this network analysis, study provides common varieties present strategy documents, analyzed more detail future research.
