Reinterpreting Authoritarian Populisms: The Elitist Plebeian Vision of State

Authoritarian populists offer a vision of state. This ideologically fixed imaginary provides an electoral-authoritarian template for how to shape states once in power. Yet not all those called are populist. Some elitist plebeians. They construct themselves as ‘the moral elite’ above which fights people’ below against corrupt’. I argue that plebeianism contains distinct government elected guardianship. Like populists, plebeians advocate extending executive they envisage this the realization people’s will, but projection accountability downwards. To them, divisions power acceptable guardian labour. Rival opinions illegitimate, just irrelevant, opposition is intolerable. Therefore, studies populist authoritarianism should be revisited. Elitist plebeian visions state may have been misread authoritarian ones. examine President Magufuli (Tanzania) exemplar and identify other potential worldwide.
