Regrowth-free AlGaInAs MQW polarization controller integrated with a sidewall grating DFB laser

Polarization control is at the heart of high-capacity data optical communication systems, such as polarization-division multiplexers and Stokes vector modulation transmitters. Despite passive polarization being mature, realization monolithically integrated controllers single longitudinal mode light sources, distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers, importance. In this research, we report an AlGaInAs multiple-quantum-well photonic circuit device which can state output source, consisting a converter (PMC), differential phase shifter (DPS), sidewall grating DFB laser. We demonstrate asymmetrical stepped-height ridge waveguide PMC to realize TE TM conversion symmetrical straight DPS enable rotation from approximately counterclockwise circular linear polarization. Based on identical epitaxial layer scheme, all PMC, DPS, lasers be using only step metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy two steps III-V material dry etching. For DFB-PMC device, high efficiency (98.4%) over wide range injection currents reported 1555 nm wavelength. DFB-PMC-DPS nearly 60° Poincaré sphere was obtained with bias voltage 0 −3.0 V laser drive current 170 mA.
