Regional-scale interactions between groundwater and surface water under changing aridity: evidence from the River Awash Basin, Ethiopia

چکیده

Relationships between surface waters and groundwaters at basin scale are rarely investigated but have important implications for water resource development management. Here, we integrate evidence from geochemical tracers piezometry to advance the understanding of regional-scale, groundwater–surface interactions in River Awash Basin Ethiopia. Hydrological characteristics consistent with those observed other semi-arid arid basins where rivers predominantly losing act as a source recharge rather than sink groundwater discharge. Further, regional flow originating highlands exits catchment discharging riverine drainage. Consequently, abstraction several regional-scale aquifers lowlands is not expected impact river flow. However, salinity presents major threat irrigation supply. We identify critical areas managing inflows, use, wetlands quality that significant security across basin.

Diets of the Red-billed Quelea (quelea Quelea) in the Awash River Basin of Ethiopia

INTRODUCTION An understanding of the feeding ecology of the red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea) is necessary for a comprehensive assessment of the potential impact of this species on cereals development. Queleas are reported to subsist primarily on wild Gramineae (Ward 1965a; Gaston 1976), but their mobility and tendency to feed in large aggrega-tions readily adapts them to becoming a major cerea...

Surface water quality and cropping systems sustainability under a changing climate in the Upper Mississippi River Basin

Agricultural nonpoint source pollution is the main source of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the intensely row-cropped Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB) stream system and is considered the primary cause of the northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. A point of crucial importance in this region is therefore how intensive corn (Zea mays L.)-...

External Factors Affecting Firm Growth: Evidence from Small Scale Manufacturing Firms in Tigray Regional State of Ethiopia

It is widely agreed that small scale enterprises (SSEs) used to play a crucial role in achieving the industrial and economic development. Though SSEs play indispensable economic role, studies are limited to analyze the external factors that affect the growth of SSEs independently. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to examine the effect of external firm factors influencing small scale ma...
