Regional intergroup bias

چکیده
Recent advances in large-scale data collection have created new opportunities for psychological scientists who study intergroup bias. By leveraging big data, researchers can aggregate individual measures of bias into regional estimates to predict outcomes consequence. This small-but-growing area has already impacted the field with well-powered research identifying relationships between biases and societally-important, ecologically-valid outcomes. In this chapter, we summarize existing review relevant theoretical perspectives. Intergroup bias.
This chapter reviews the extensive literature on bias in favor of in-groups at the expense of out-groups. We focus on five issues and identify areas for future research: (a) measurement and conceptual issues (especially in-group favoritism vs. out-group derogation, and explicit vs. implicit measures of bias); (b) modern theories of bias highlighting motivational explanations (social identity, o...
متن کاملLanguage use in intergroup contexts: the linguistic intergroup bias.
Three experiments examine how the type of language used to describe in-group and out-group behaviors contributes to the transmission and persistence of social stereotypes. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that people encode and communicate desirable in-group and undesirable out-group behaviors more abstractly than undesirable in-group and desirable out-group behaviors. Experiment 1 provide...

متن کاملAnxiety and Intergroup Bias 1 Running head: COALITIONAL PSYCHOLOGY AND INTERGROUP BIAS Anxiety and intergroup bias: Terror management or coalitional psychology?
Contemplation of death increases support of ingroup ideologies, a result explained by proponents of terror management theory (TMT) as an attempt to buffer existential anxiety. While TMT claims that only death-salient stimuli yield such effects, an evolutionary perspective suggests that increased intergroup bias may occur in response to a wide variety of situations that, in ancestral environment...
متن کاملIntergroup time bias and racialized social relations.
Within the framework of intergroup relations, the authors analyzed the time people spent evaluating ingroup and outgroup members. They hypothesized that White participants take longer to evaluate White targets than Black targets. In four experiments, White participants were slower to form impressions of White than of Black people; that is, they showed an intergroup time bias (ITB). In Study 1 (...
